Pedro to The Marlins?

January 10, 2009

UPDATE:

Looks like Pedro might not be going to the Marlins after all. The Miami Herald is reporting that for now, the Marlins are not interested in the 37-year-old pitcher and might not have the money to afford him even if they were. *phew!*

While the word is Martinez would like to pitch for the Marlins ( one source told me recently it would be his “first choice”) the Marlins have had no recent discussions with Martinez and his camp, and none are planned. – Clark Spencer / Miami Herald

Please God, let this end in nothing. The last thing I want to see is my beloved Pedro go to the damn Marlins. They’re basically our enemies, not as much as the Phillies, but they don’t like us and its obvious. The past two years it’s  been the Marlins who have finished us off…leaving us with nothing but questions and disbelief…”another collapse?!”. Pedro can’t go there.

ESPN Deportes is reporting that the Marlins and Pedro Martinez are in the beginning stages of developing a contract.

SANTO DOMINGO, Domican Republic — Pedro Martinez and the Florida Marlins are believed to be in the beginning stages of negotiating a contract and could meet next week, a source told ESPNdeportes.com Saturday night.

The Marlins have spoken with Martínez’s agent.

Martinez, 37, has won three Cy Young awards and has a career record of 214-99, with a 2.91 ERA and 3,117 strikeouts in 17 seasons with Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston and the New York Mets.

It sorta does make sense though. Pedro is a veteran, a 3-time Cy Young winner, and a great clubhouse presence. It would also be good to have him around their young lineup and bring some leadership to the team. He also owns a house in Miami and would be close(er) to home.
