Mets Sign Four More

January 29, 2009

The Associated Press & ESPN are reporting that the Mets have signed OF Bobby Kielty, Pitchers Tony Armas Jr., Matt DeSalvo, and Valerio De Los Santos. All four have been signed to minor league deals. Heres a lil’ something on Kilety…

OF Bobby Kielty
Signed by the Minnesota Twins as an amateur FA in 1999, Bobby Kielty spent time between the big leagues and the minors not just with the Twins but with the Blue Jays, The A’s and Boston; Kilety, an outfielder has hit .254 with 53 HR’s and 253 RBI in the big leagues so far.
In 2007 while playing for the A’s he was designated for assignment to make room for closer Houston Street –  he was released a week later.
The Red Sox signed him to a minor league deal and gave him an opportunity to become a 4th outfielder but only ended up playing 20 games in the big leagues after being called up from AAA.
He asked for and was granted a release in July of ’08 and later signed by the Twins to a minor league deal as well but again was asked to be released after he was never called up even after rosters expanded.

Fun Fact:

On October 28, in his only World Series at bat and on the first pitch, Kielty hit a pinch-hit solo home run in Game 4 of the 2007 World Series, which turned out to be the series-clinching game winner in the 4-3 final over the Colorado Rockies. He is the 21st player to hit a pinch-hit home run in the World Series.
