Mets On Verge Of Signing Oliver Perez

February 2, 2009

According to various major-league sources the deal is reportedly said to be 3 years and definitely some sort of option.

Here we go!

First, Ken Rosenthal reported the Mets were closer to signing Perez but I didn’t think much of it since he’s been saying that for weeks.

The Mets, pushing to solidify their starting rotation, are moving closer to re-signing free-agent left-hander Oliver Perez, according to major-league sources.

The team is “trying to hold the line” on a three-year contract for Perez, one source said, but a vesting option for a fourth year remains possible.

But now, Jon Heyman is also confirming it and saying they’re on the verge of signing Ollie. Great news! Let’s get it done, it’s been taking too long!

Free-agent left-hander Oliver Perez is on the verge of signing a deal to remain with the New York Mets, has confirmed. Perez went 10-7 with a 4.22 ERA for the Mets in 2008.

He’s also claiming Oliver wanted to stay in Queens. Hmm, I don’t know about that part, I find it funny he hasn’t expressed this all off-season long and now Jon’s saying this? Whatever.

Perez had been wanting to return to the Mets all along. He recently got married and was having trouble envisioning himself elsewhere than Queens, where he has pitched since being acquired in a 2006 trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
